Moving From Xp to 7

So for those of you who are currently running XP but are planning to upgrade to the new upcoming Windows 7 are in for a little treat. Unfortunately Microsoft has not made the upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 possible. So now you’re probably wondering how you’re going to upgrade. I am also in this situation so I looked into it. Although it is not possible to upgrade without doing a clean install, Microsoft has created a feature that is included with the Windows 7 upgrade disc called Windows easy transfer. What this program will do is before you decide to do your clean install you can run this included feature that will scan your computer and backup what it feels will be needed in the future. As for the files that get backed up, you get to chose three locations in which you wish to store them. You will be able to use an easy transfer cable (not included so you'll have to buy one), a network drive (transfer the files over your home network to another computer or network storage device), or as your final option you may transfer your files to an external Hard Drive or Flash Drive.
Although this feature does back up some of your files, it does not back up everything. Meaning that if you don’t keep your files in your My Documents folder you may end up losing files. Also this feature does not transfer applications that you have installed. We recommend that you create your own backup of your hard drive to an external storage device, such as external hard drive, flash drive, or the such.
To sum it all up, although Microsoft should have created an easier way to allow upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7, at least they thought of something. However this feature only saves your documents, and a few other files, making it so that upgrade is still a hassle. On the bright side this gives you a chance to clean up your computer, and get rid of all the unnecessary files you have. If you don’t mind having to reinstall all of your applications and don’t care about what gets saved, this will be an easy decision for you; however if you don’t want to go through the trouble of upgrading your computer you may want to stick with XP for now. Eventually however we would recommend making the switch. As for those of you who are still wondering if the switch from Windows XP to Windows 7 is really worth it, it is, I know many people, including myself who are currently using the Windows 7 Release Candidate and absolutely love it.

All of the staff including myself would like to welcome you to the new PcProbs! For those of you that were paying attention, we have been talking a lot lately about getting a new custom theme to help improve the image of PcProbs. Well that is just one of the reasons we have migrated to a new theme, we have also created a new theme to be unique as well as provide you with more functionality throughout the site that we were unable to provide before with our old theme.
If you find any problems with this theme (we've spent a lot of time debugging, so we hope there won't be any) please feel free to tell us about it by commenting.
I would also like to thank everyone who helped make this possible, especially Jchamb since he did most of the work on the theme and spent a lot of time coding it so make sure to show him your appreciation.
